Puerto de Alcala

Just a gorgeous spot, particularly at night. It's a lovely monument and if you look closely you can even see where it's been under attack as well!

Faro de Madrid

Also known as the space needle, the Faro de Madrid is an enormous tower on the outskirts of Madrid from which you can get some fantastic views over the city. It costs only about 1 euro to go up the tower and its well worth it. Take the number three metro to Monocloa from where you'll be able to see the tower.

Temple of Debod

posted by phaile on 30 November 2010 at 11:08

In the 70s, the Egyptians had to call on the help of the Spanish government to cope with the problems caused by the flooding of the Nile. As a thank you gift for the Spanish help, they built this 4th century BC temple in Madrid which was demolished, transported and then reconstructed stone by stone in a pretty park in the centre of town. Its a curious sight and really worth a visit.

Valley of the Fallen

Santa Cruz del Valle Los Caidos - or the valley of the fallen is Franco's monument to the casualties of the Spanish civil war. Its a fantastic monument, with a 500 foot high cross perched on top of a rock into which is carved a spectacular basilica.

Monument of Don Quixote

posted by mjohnson on 30 November 2010 at 10:59

This is a great monument to perhaps the greatest character in Spanish literature. It's constructed like a grand triumphal monument to a great warrior which I found amusing given the content of the story. He's displayed on horse back accompanied by Sancho Panza on the back of a mule. A really nice touch.
