If you're desperate to leave Marrakech - and after about half a day there, you will be. The Ourika valley is the place to go. You can get a 4x4 tour there and see the beautiful Atlas mountains. There are also opportunities to go quad biking and white water rafting as well as swimming in the fresh water lakes here.

Compared to the Tanneries of Fes, the Marrakech tanneries are really nothing to get excited about, but if you don't get the opportunity to go to Fes, you should have a look here. Its really a full sensory experience with the lurid colours of the pits, hectic bustle and of course the acrid smell of guano. Try to avoid getting a guide as they will only try to heard you into a mate's shop...

The Dyer's souq is easily the most photogenic spot in Marrakesh - which is really saying something! You can see the areas where the dyer's work to colour their strands of wool. The scene of luminous multi coloured wools hanging from the rafters of this market is quite stunning, and if like me, you feel sufficiently swept up in the romance of the market to buy something - Haggle hard and aim for about a fifth of the starting price!

Admission to the Menara Gardens is free and whilst its hardly the most exciting spot in all of Marrakech, it is a very attractive place and a good place to cool off and calm down. There is a big lake in the middle of the gardens with a picturesque 19th century pavilion on the shore. You can't get in to the pavilion.
