El Badi Palace

posted by wunk on 27 September 2011 at 10:50

We went here thinking we were seeing the original super-opulent palace, but this is just a rebuild. Still, it's quite nice to look around for a bit although calling it "like the Alhambra" is a bit of a stretch.

Our guide around here said the original palace was veru much larger and grander but if you model it on the Alhambra even the smaller sister can't fail to be pretty impressive!

The story behind this palace is quite bizarre, it was kitted out in gold and sumptuous decor throughout but then another sultan took a fancy to these bits and took them all away. What remains is fascinating, a huge site with so much to explore, although sadly no more gold leaf! It does get pretty hot though so be sure to take water.

Oh it would have been ok to a mistress in the olden days wouldn't it? This lavish palace was built for Si Ahmed ben Musa's harem and is totally stunning. The decor and attention to detail is so great. The gardens are great too, a great display of the three cornerstones of moroccan design, light, symmetry and water.

I'm pretty sure this would have been the grandest place in its time, given the size and the stories I was told about it, particularly the amount of marble that was taken from it to make other places, and the fact that it was modelled on the alhambra in granada! A mad but cool focal point is the mimbar which was constructed in cordoba and brought over by camel (and ship i presume)!
