Chichen Itza

posted by wreade on 25 August 2010 at 17:18

Chichen Itza is an ancient Mayan site and unmissable if you're in nearby Cancun. The most famous thing here is the iconic Castille which is an enormous pyramid. There's much more to the site though and most tour companies will allow you a couple of hours to wonser around as well as some time for a history lesson. It's a long day so take all precautions against sun stroke.

Bosque de Chapultepec

posted by kwise on 25 August 2010 at 17:10

This is apparently one of the biggest urban parks in the world and at 543 acres is an oasis of calm away from the dirt and pollution of the city. There is a zoo and a lake that you can take a boat out on. The highlight though is the beautiful castle which is a great piece of Spanish colonial architecture, although the site dates back to an Aztec stronghold.

Zocalo

posted by mmcmullen on 25 August 2010 at 17:01

This is the centre of Mexico city and the first place you should go to orientate yourself. The Zocalo Cathedral is very beautiful and the largest in South America. You can go in for free. Also in the swuare, you find the national palace and constitutional plaza. There are lots of restaurants and cafes as well as street vendors and performers so lots of people watching to be done.

Museo de Arte Moderno

posted by rdunkle on 25 August 2010 at 16:48

This is a great museum and I would recommend it over the other museums of Mexico city as its focus is entirely on Mexican and Latin American contemporary art. There are some fantastic works in the permanent collection and a fairly strong series of specialist exhibitions.

Anthropological Museum

posted by mtoyley on 25 August 2010 at 16:41

The Anthropological museum is one of the best museums in the world supposedly and is really informative- the kind of place you could spend half a day in. The admission price is only a couple of pounds. There are exhibits on the pre historic period, lots of information on the Aztecs and there are also travelling exhibits here on world anthropology.
