I had been looking for an excuse to get out of the city and Sergiev Posad seemed perfect. It's on the so called Golden Ring 70 km north of Moscow and you can get there on the elektrichka train from Yarolavskysta station. The town is home to the Sergus Lavra monastery which is really beautiful and a fairly typical piece of Russian orthodox architecture.

My husband and I had a peaceful time here, it's one of my outstanding memories from our holiday in Moscow, such a shame that the soviets destroyed so much of it. Lovely buildings and you can tell from the bit of the wall left it must have been an amazingly impressive place once upon a time.

As a fan of the ridiculous, I really loved spotting these (seven) super-grandiose 'wedding'cake' style buildings around the city, a legacy to Stalin's pomp and ambition. The buildings are all really tall and in the same style but range in uses, you can even stay in a couple of them as they are hotels.

all over the city, check out the internet before you go to get the style and then you'll be good to go!

This stunning building is home to the Bolshoi Ballet Company, and we saw the most beautiful show there. Although a modern ballet, which i don't normally enjoy, the dancers were excellent adn the theatre itself was really lovely.
