What a fascinating place! There is so much history here that you can almost feel overwhelmed, so just enjoy the experience. Make sure that you look out for the metalwork and ivories though, they were my wife's highlight.

I loved this tower, apparently inspired by both Giotto's bell tower in Florence, which is one of my favourite cities ever, and big ben in London. I was shown it on a tour visiting friends in Mumbai and I was immediately taken with it. Looking closer offers yet more rewards with 8 statues revealing themselves as the different castes, so important in indian culture.

The Church of St John the Evangelist was built to commemorate the war dead from the British Afghan war of the 19th Century - hence its popular name. I became obssessed with british colonial architecture in Indai and this church is a particularly austere Victorian gothic building.

The Elephanta Island features fantastic networks of carved cave trmples. These date from the 5th to 8th century AD - the earlier carvings being Buddhist and the later Hindu. The Main cave is really quite incredible and is reckoned to be one of the best temple caves in India.

This is a beautiful and poignant memorial to a Sufi from the region who renounced his posessions and went on the Haj to Mecca. It is especially beautiful at sunset seen from the land.
