Sur al Lawatiya

posted by qratcliff on 23 August 2010 at 13:54

This is the oldest district in Matrah and has a very traditional feel to it. It is the walled district established by the Lawatiya tribe several centuries ago. It has lots of ornate stone and wood work, arabesques and elegant little balconies. It's certainly a change from the noisy modernity of most of Muscat

Diving

posted by flauffer on 23 August 2010 at 13:49

There are a number of diving operators in Muscat, I chose to go with GoDiveOman. I can't compare them to the competition but can comfortably say that they offered a great service. Muscat is a great place to dive with lots of reef and very diverse underwater life. There's also some excellent visibility. If you go, make sure you check out the wreck of the al Munassir ship which is submerged beneath the water and now accomodates a fantastic number of fish.

Dolphin Watching

posted by pfischer on 23 August 2010 at 13:44

Off the bay of Muscat you can get boat tours which will take you to watch the dolphins which congregate here every morning. The tours will also take you for a tour of the wider bay area for a small extra fee. after that, you can check out the fish market which is considerably more exotic than the one I'm used to in Billingsgate!

As Sultan Qaboos Mosque

posted by bfoster on 23 August 2010 at 13:32

The Sultan Qaboos Mosque has been standing for less than 20 years but is built in very traditional style. Its possible to go inside the mosque between 8 and 11 am providing you dress respectfully- legs covered, women must cover their hair. there is also the world's largest chandelier and for rug fanatics, the second largest handmade carpet!
