Visiting the Roman catacombs is essential for understanding early Christianity, particularly in its relationship to the empire. Ten martyrs, 16 popes and numerous early Christians are buried here. among them St. Celelia is the patron saint of music, so her tomb is particularly popular. The catacombs remain official cemeteries of the Church. Worship spaces include two small basillicas and three apses.

Located in New York Harbor, Ellis Island is the debarcation point where over 12 million immigrants came into our country. From 1892 until 1954, travellers were screened here, provided appropriate medical interventions, and admitted to their new lives in the United States. Now the visitor center and museum is part of the Statue of Liberty Monument as run by the National Park Service. A wall of honor is maintained at the Island, and free gealogical searching is available in person or on line. whether or not one's own ancestors came through ellis Island -- my own idid -- this is a pwerful place to visit to undertand -- not only the history of America, but the meaning of America. Note: You must take the ferry to the island, and can visit the Statue of Liberty as part of your tour, or not, as you so choose.

it is so pleasant to walk across the Waterloo Bridge, have a drink or supper and go to a concert, play or ballet at the National Theater. The venue is superb for all kinds of events. Pricing is very fair, and productions are top line. The gift shops include resources for professionals as well as souvenirs. Backstage tours are available daily. The front halls and foyers include free exhibitions and sight seeing over the Thames.

The Abbey is one of my favorite places in all the world: it remains primarily an absolutely glorious worship space offering Holy communion as well as Morning and Evening Prayer daily. Steeped in history, monuments and tombs abound, with many wonderful surprises to discover among the royalty, poets, artists, and others buried here. The inscription at Queen Exlizabeth I's tomb is poignant as is standing in the spot where Thomas a Becket was killed. Walking in the cloisters provides a deep connection with the monastic prayers offered here for centuries, especially when watching the paving stones for the names or stories of monks. Taking time to do brass rubbings, attend services or listen to concerts endears the Abbey to any visitor for its contemporary life as well as its history.

There is so much to do and see in Rome that you need to know to look for this titular church! Why? Mostly because Bernini's marble sculpture St. Teresa in Ecstasy "lives" in the Cornaro Chapel to the left of the altar. This is among the most exquisite of all work by this 17th century master. The spirituality of the representation is nearly palpable, while the artistic details are absolutely breathtaking! Other works in the church include Guidi's Dream of St. Joseph as well as painings by Guercino, Lorrain and Domenichino. Tourism here has increased since the church is featured in Dan Brown's Angels and Demons.
