Along with Armstrongs, rusty Zip flies the vintage flag in Edinburgh as well as clothing half its student population. Eclectic is the order of the day with hipster, smart and fancy dress receiving a fairly equal waiting. You'll have to rummage hard but there are some real bargains here if you can find them.

GCHQ of Edinburgh's hippy community, Forest cafe is a great place to pop in for lunch, a coffee or a slice of cake. They only serve vegetarean food, all on non matching crockery. This is part of the charm of the place really and it's nice to see that their are people there til late at night chatting and hanging out.

The Filmhouse is located on Lothian Road and is one of the best cinemas I've been to anywhere in the UK. They show current releases but put on films throghout the day and evening which come from a much more euro art house background. The cafe there is also wonderful.

The swimming pool here was Eden in the middle of Nevada! stylish and minimal in style, there was a single hot tub next to it and plenty of comfortable loungers. We got given bottled water for free! I'd have stayed here for the pool alone, though fortunately the hotel was really lovely throughout.

Wynnn is a really great hotel with very professional staff, lovely spacious rooms, well furnished throughout. The big bonus really is the massive swimming pool which swallowed most of our holiday!
