Eco Tour Farmara (Local Charms)

posted by mbrice on 19 January 2011 at 11:56

Although i'm not a fan of tours it seemed the best way to see a little more of the island without the hassle of hiring a car. We chose an eco tour from the village of Famara where I was blown away by the beauty of the beach and the delicious tapas (although the health products they sold weren't that great), then onto the Cesar Manrique Foundation and finally a drive into the wine region for some tasting. Great day out.

We got picked up from our hotel, although others on the tour had had to make their own way there.

Montanas del Fuego

The highlight of my trip to Lazarote, I couldn't believe the landscape and how far removed it felt from the subathing and the all-inclusive resorts! The bus trip once you reach the park takes you on an amazing journey complete with history, commentary and stops at the most stunning views. The wonders don't cease at the end of the ride though, at the visitors centre you can eat food cooked right from the heat of the 'dormant' volcano!!

St. Mary's Cathedral

I was continually surprised by San Francisco on my holidays there, and this was one of the most striking places I saw. The ouside is just mad and the inside is stunning, with great views and an amazing kinetic culpture above the altar. A must-see in my book!!

MoMA

I adored this modern art museum, housed in the stunning Mario Botta building, the skylights really add an extra dimension. I was amazed at how great the collection was too, the west coast not normally being known for modern art, with Warhol, Picasso and Dali the personal highlights.

Mission Dolores

posted by gdonnely on 19 January 2011 at 11:27

This is the last remaining mission chapel in the city, and as such is an important landmark, being the oldest church in the whole of california. Most parts have been renovated though but the facade is original, making it a pretty special place to go. The next door basilica is also well worth visiting.
