Grassmarket

posted by rgottwine on 3 December 2010 at 10:55

What was once the centre for a market and public hangings is now a great place to admire a mix of architecture and grab some drinks or a bite to eat in the heart of the old town.

Greyfriars Bobby

posted by jjohnson on 3 December 2010 at 10:54

My dogs are practically my life so we had to make a trek to the Greyfriars cemetery where loyal Bobby came to his master, John Grey's grave, practically living there for 14 years and managing to escape eviction on numerous occasions. Now there is a statue of him in the cemetery where he was buried too.

Casa Battlo

posted by pcherry on 3 December 2010 at 10:33

I think I would pay a lot of money to live in Casa Battlo, it's my idea of architectural heaven. I've seen a lot of gaudi's work and this is definitely the best in my eyes.

Casa Mila (La Pedrera)

posted by kkepplinger on 3 December 2010 at 10:31

I adore Gaudi's work and I was so enthralled by Casa Mila, his imagining of what an apartment block could be like. There's not a straight line in sight and even the ceilings are wonky to allow the maximum light in. The roof is my favourite bit, with a multitude of crazy chimneys looking like a dream-army!

Placa d'Espanya

posted by bwyatt on 3 December 2010 at 10:30

From a grim past of public gallows and abbatoirs this square is now a really exciting place to visit. My boyfriend and I got off the tourist bus for a bit here and explored. The bullring is a fantastic structure, but i'm glad it's not been popular. The ventian towers are so like the one in venice that you feel like it's a mirage to see two, and whilst i didn't much rate the fountain I loved miro's 'woman and bird'.
