Samaria Gorge

posted by gschere on 10 August 2010 at 13:45

This was a massive exertion but well worth it and a bit of a must for any trip to Crete. There are lots of endemic birds and plants along the way which are very beautiful and some lovely little streams. We did get very hot along the way but there were water vendors so it was never too much of a problem. At the end of the gorge, you can get a boat to Hera Sfakin and then head back to town for a well deserved dinner!

Knossos

posted by ccribbs on 10 August 2010 at 13:38

This is probably the most important archaeological site to visit in Crete and well worth giving half a day over to as it is extensive and quite beautiful. There are lots of mosaics here which are in a supprisingly good state as well as some frescoes and some very informative displays about the palace and life in it.

Sitia Beach

posted by jhincken on 10 August 2010 at 13:32

Of course there are plenty of beaches to choose from on Crete. We spent a lot of time on Sitia beach which has lovely golden sand and is set in a very attractive setting. There are showers available which is a must in my mind and there are lots of loungers for hire. We hired out some snorkelling equipment which made for a pleasant couple of hours

Hersonissos open air museum

posted by nrifler on 10 August 2010 at 13:25

I'd been to a few open air museums before but this one stands out as the best. It was founded to give tourists an idea of what life was like in pre industrial Crete and is really quite effective. You can look around the old farmers' and merchants' house, chapels, old raki distilleries and ceramic workshops. There are also demonstrations which go on throughout the day.

Rhodes Old Town

posted by cdunkle on 10 August 2010 at 13:15

I don't think a trip to Rhodes would really be complete without getting lost for several hours in the beautiful Old Town. It is one of the oldest surviving medieval towns in the world but has elements which date back much further. Go in through the Eleftheria gate, see the ruins in the Simi square and make sure you spend some time on the Street of the Knights. Other than that, revel in your inability to get your bearings and make sure you stop for a traditional meal in one of the Old Town's many diners.
