Playa del carmen

posted by hschere on 19 October 2010 at 17:39

You might come to find Cancun a little bit too much after a while. It certainly is rather hectic touristy and commercial. Playa del Carmen is a great remedy. It's not exactly 'local' and most of the shops are still tourist shops but there aren't any high rises here and none of the big chains of diners.

Playa de Palma nightlife

The bars and nightclubs in Playa de Palma are a lot of fun, there is some great music, alcohol is really cheap and the night goes on late!

la Almudaina

This is quite a magical building and all the more so for the fact that it still gets used in the summer months when the royal family holiday here. The initial structure was a Moorish palace but when the Moors lost control of Majorca, it became the seat of the independent monarchy of Majorca. You can see the fusion of Muslim and Gothic styles which are very interesting.

Soller

posted by hberkheimer on 19 October 2010 at 17:16

This little village is perched high up in the mountains, a fairly long winding drive from Palma. This said, the drive is enjoyable if a bit nauseating and the views from Soller make it worth it. There's a lovely little church here and a charmingly authentic traditional feel to the village.

Palma Nova/ Magalluf

This is probably the area more for the young visitor although we couldn't help but enjoy ourselves here. its bustling and touristy but the beaches are beautiful and there's plenty to do in and plenty of watersports to take part in.
