The Adler Planetarium is very nicely located looking over Lake Michigan. It is the oldest planetarium in the USA and brilliantly recreates the CHicago night sky. There is an excellent museum of astronomy as well as an indoor sun. A great day out for the whole family. Tickets are around $15 per person.

Its well worth taking a boat tour down the chicago river towards Lake Michigan. The commentaries are very good and give a great history of the town. You also get to see Chicago from a different angle. Wendella boats are reckoned to be the best tour operator, though there seem to be quite a few companies offering a fairly similar service. If you can see the river on st Patrick's day when the plumbers union turns it bright green, it's a sight you won't soon forget!

If you're only going to climb one skyscraper in Chicago, you should probably make it the Sears Tower but if that's not enough for you, head up the John Hancock centre which has a 94th floor observatory and great views out over the city and Lake Michigan. There's even an open air skywalk which i imagine must be a bit hair raising. We went to the Signature Room on the next storey where we had a drink at the bar.

No one will know what you're talking about if you ask for directions to the Willis Tower. To Chicagoans it will always be the Sears tower despite the official name change... Not that you'd need directions though. This is the tallest building in the city and visible from miles around. It costs about $16 to go up the tower and you get some incredible views for this money. You can also venture out on the skydeck- a protruding glass walk way and not for vertigo suferers. Go up at dusk and see the city light up.

If you happen to be passing near by this lovely little village, try to make a detour - preferably at lunchtime. Its just south west of Kos town and is mainly inhabitted by Turkish people. In my books that means great food guaranteed. Choose from any of the diners around the main square for an inexpensive meal.
