Pike Place Market

posted by btillson on 25 August 2010 at 12:51

The Pike Place Market is incredible! It is very popular amongst tourists but that doesn't detract from the fact that it is a living, breathing slice of Seattle heritage. It's reckoned to be the biggest farmers' market in the USA and hosts shops of pretty much all kinds, not just farmers and fishermen. There are also loads of restaurants of all kinds and some twee little souveneir shops.

Swiss National Museum

posted by wreighner on 25 August 2010 at 12:42

The Swiss National Museum lives inside an amazing Germanic neo gothic fairytale castle of a building. At Christmas time, it's especially lovely as it hosts a festive market and an ice rink. The museum itself is a comprehensive collection of exhibits chronicling the history of Switzerland from prehistoric times to the modern day. Thoroughly educational.

Bahnhofstrasse

posted by rjelliman on 25 August 2010 at 12:36

Bahnhofstrasse is THE place to shop in Zurich - if you can afford it, that is. It's home to some of the world's top designers- Armani, Hermes, Louis Vuitton etc. Even if you're not interested in buying anything, it's a lovely street with a tram running down the middle and some gorgeous 19th century architecture. There are also some great little food stalls and its great at night for people watching.

Mannendorf

This is one of the many little lido areas of the lake where it's possible to swim. It only costs £2 entry and there are ping pong and volleyball facilities here too. In midsummer, the temprerature of the lake is lovely and its cleaned daily by the staff of the Lido

Grossmunster Cathedral

posted by hwilson on 25 August 2010 at 12:21

This Cathedral is the main landmark in Zurich and is really interesting. It was started in the 11th century but like most structures of its size from that time, took ages to complete and as a result displays a real range of styles with lots of romanesque and gothic elements. You can climb the tower for an unbeatable view of the town. The crypt was my favourite part of the cathedral. There's a great sculpture of Charlemagne there and you can also see music recitals.
