The History museum is housed in Jakarta's old town hall and is perhaps not as impressive as you might expect. It does however have some very important pieces- the Hindu Batu Tulis engraved stone from the 5th century, a statue of Vishnu and the million year old man of Java. There are a lot of artefacts from the Dutch colonial period too.

This is the area of Jakarta where you can buy old and second hand books. Some are even antiques. I found a couple of English novels and some beautiful old Indonesian books which I bought as souvenirs. Its a pretty little district even if you don't buy anything.

The Gereja Katedral is worth seeing if only because the sight of an enormous imposing gothic cathedral in central Jakarta only a stone's through from a mosque is a weird one. It is neo gothic and has some rather attractive painted steel spires

Its definitely worth setting aside an hour to see the Jade Buddha Temple in the West of Shanghai. The temple was built in 1928 to replace the previous temple which was destroyed by revolutionaries. The statues are carved out of whole chunks of white jade and depict a sitting and recumbent Buddha and are very beautiful

The Shanghai People's Square is extremely modern and has a very cosmopolitan feel to it. The main reason to visit it would be the museum which has a large array of artefacts from throughout Chinese history. Highlights are the bronze age collection, the coins and the ceramics. There's also a well stocked bookshop.
