Naples is a great base from which to make a trip to Pompeii, and if you're in this part of the world, you really shouldn't miss out. There are guided tours in English which are very useful to help you understand what you're seeing. It's quite an eery place, there are petrified bodies and plaster casts of figures made from the imprints their bodies left in the volcanic ash. Much of the architecture is perfectly preserved and the villas give a perfect illustration of life in the ancient period.

The Archaeological museum is one of the oldest of its kind in the world and has a fantastic collection of sculptures and painting from Roman times. Amongst highlights are some of the Farnese sculptures, relics from the Caracalla baths in Rome and frescoes from Pompeii. A highlight for me though was the 'Secret Cabinet' which holds some fairly explicit erotic sculptures found in Pompeii.

This is an utterly unique area of Venice in Italy and in Europe. The degree of dilapidation made it feel more like a catholic area of an Indian town! there are some vast ramshackle churches, overgrown courtyards and crumbling icons rising out of the filth. A fascinating experience.

If you only plan to see one museum in your time in Naples, it should definitely be this one. Its situated in a grand Bourbon Palazzo and has an exquisite collection of painting. This includes works from the Naplesschool, but most visitors will probably find the collection of Titians Carravagios and El Grecos more exciting. A highlight of my time in Naples.

The history of the Piazza Plebiscito is slightly complex as it was initially conceived as a tribute to Napoleon Bonaparte only to be finally be built to celebrate the 1870 unification of Naples into the state of Italy. All that aside it is an incredibly grand place and a congregation point for Neopolitains.
