Top of the Rock

posted by irishiiiiiis on 30 April 2009 at 02:06

Top of the Rock is the top of the Rockefeller Plaza in the heart of New York City. The observation deck (70th floor) is new and offers you the opportunity to see the New York City skyline from either outside or sitting on a nice comfy leather couch from the inside (it gets really cold that high up.) You have a 360 degree view of the city plus of the Empire State Building. It opens at sunrise and closes around 11pm. You can even get and sunrise sunset pass to see both in one day if you are so inclined. I live in NYC and always have visitors from Europe, they always want to go to the Empire State Building, I tell them the Top of the Rock is a million times better, but they still want to do the Empire State Building. After we wait on line thru stages of the building (4 hours in total is not unusual) you get to the 80th floor and are told the top observation floors are closed because they are under construction (and will be for years) Also you are advise to walk the last 7 flights instead of waiting another 30 minutes for the 6 person maximum capacity elevator to take you to the 86th floor (not the top). I take my tourist visitors on another day to the Top of the Rock and they always say, "Oh that was a million times better than the Empire State Building." I sigh and say I know, but you never listen. The views after sunset are fantastic, the Empire State Building is closed at 4 so no opportunity for evening skyline viewing. Additionally you can book the day and time you want to go to Top of the Rock and avoid the long wait like the Empire State Building. It is much cheaper and when you are done you are in the heart of Manhatten's shopping and restaurants not cruddy 34th St. So listen to a New Yorker, go to Top of the Rock, skip the Empire State Building its only 17 floors higher and when you are that far up, it does not matter!!!!

Keens Steakhouse

posted by RoboLincoln on 27 April 2009 at 19:14

Although many New Yorkers consider Peter Luger in Brooklyn to be the best steakhouse in New York City, I would have to disagree. Keens makes dry aged steaks that rival Luger's any day, and their house specialty, the mutton chop, is one of a kind. Keens also has so much history behind it...it was originally the pub and hangout for actors and theater folk working in the theater upstairs, and Lily Langtry famously broke the gender barrier by being the first woman to successfully demand to be allowed to dine here. Take note of the tobacco pipes lining the restaurant and hanging from the ceilings. They belonged to a wealth of significant clients like former statesmen and celebrities. I recommend that anyone who comes here try the Porterhouse. It's unbelievable.
