aka The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Without a doubt this is the top museum in NY. So much to see, the art covers all media and the vast majority of human history, without having that we-stole-all-this feel of the British Museum!! The Robert Lehman Collection was spectacular but I just can't pick out a highlight!

It doesn't get much more iconic than this! I don't think a trip to New York is complete without a trip to the statue of liberty which stands as serene as ever looking over the harbour.

I don't think you can really understand the mindset of New York today without paying a visit to Ground Zero. Its definately a sombre experience but some museum displays and sculptures make it an almost uplifting place and a tribute to New York's spirit of survival.

The NBC studio tour takes you behind the scenes at the studio and you get to see some of the popoular shows up close like the Today Show and Saturday Night Live. They only take you into sets that aren't in progress, but you get a lot of history - back to the days of radio and the transition to TV. It is very interesting.

The American Museum of Natural History is an incredible museum in New York. Not only does it have some incredible artifacts, such as an Easter Island Statue or a Mayan stone calendar, but it does a great job presenting the artifacts in an easily accessible manner. They have a great collection of dinosaur fossils and a gigantic planetarium contained in a several story tall glass cube. The planetarium itself is quite neat as they have laid out the timeline of the universe in a walkable path that gives one a better sense of scale than straight numbers can provide. In a city that has dozens of must see places, if you are a fan of history, this should be at the top of your list of places to visit. It makes a good first stop in an exciting day in New York. Just a helpful note, plan on going earlier in the day because it gets really crowded as the day progresses, especially on a weekday as schools bring lots of kids for field trips to the museum.
