Yonah Schimmels Knish Bakery

posted by JohnG on 28 July 2009 at 06:35

Yonah Schimmel's Knish Bakery has been in the same location since 1910, so next year it will celebrate its 100th birthday. This tiny, but bustling bakery specializes in knishes, which are pillows of dough filled with potato, cheese, fruit, vegetables or any combination of things. People come from miles around to order knishes from Yonah Schimmel's. They are a landmark institution on the Lower East Side and their food is wonderful. Many people marvel that they've survived this long, but they have a deep compassion for their customers and are trying hard to keep the traditions alive. Their little coffee shop could use an extreme makeover, but I think the understated decor is part of its charm. Besides, you go there for the knishes, not anything else.
