rutland square hotel

posted by kikinunu on 11 June 2007 at 13:19

Flying visit to Nottingham I recently visited Nottingham to see my family. Rather than stay with my folks as I normally would, I decided to experience Nottingham as a tourist and show my partner a whistle stop tour of the sites. On a pretty limited budget as our summer holiday approaches I wanted a hotel that looked impressive but wasn’t too costly. I was really happy with the Rutland Square Hotel situated near Nottingham Castle. We paid £65 for a double room (queens sized bed) with an en suite bathroom. The service was good. Our sleep was unfortunately disturbed by some noisy guests but a quick call to reception at 1am was enough to resolve this. They responded promptly and professionally. Breakfast was included in the price and the choice was vast and very pleasing. I went for the traditional English, but I could have chosen from plenty of cereals, fruits, yogurts and Danish Pastries to name but a few. We were pleased that there was no rush to get us fed and checked out so we were able to take Sunday morning at a very leisurely pace. Parking was £5 for 24 hours, so being so conveniently located for the city centre; we decided to leave the car at the hotel while we shopped, at no extra cost. After checking out of the hotel we took a walk around the city centre, taking in the trip to Jerusalem Inn (only from the outside unfortunately, but I’ve been before and it’s great, like stepping back in time) Brewhouse yard museum also comes highly recommended. As a child I once walked the caves beneath the castle and have fond memories of this. Had our trip been longer I would have loved to have explored the caves again and taken part in a ghost walk. Maybe next time. Then we were off to the famous Market Square and shops. The Market Square had been redesigned since my last visit. The fountains still remain; where many like to mill around on hot summer days and lovely designed flower beds have been included in the overall picture. We were buying clothes for our holiday and had a great deal of choice, whatever we wanted to spend. Getting a little sidetracked from my holiday clothes mission, I particularly enjoyed the Token House (a great card and gift shop). Once our feet were beginning to blister from walking so far, we took my father out for a late lunch at a highly recommended pub in the village of Lamley. The Lamley served 1 course for £8, 2 courses for £10 and 3 for £13. All courses were beautifully presented and equally delicious. The main dishes were along the theme of a traditional Sunday dinner, but with a ‘posher’ twist. The pub, with beer garden had a friendly and clean atmosphere and stylish décor. We only spent 23 hours in total in Nottingham this time around but we felt thoroughly refreshed and enthused.
