Norwegian folk museum

The Norwegian folk museum is a lovely boat trip across the fjord of Oslo from the city. It is situated within extensive grounds and is an evocation of the living conditions in Norway since the 16th century. Also on the site is a 13th century church which looks more like a Chinese pagoda than any christian building I'd seen.

Akershus fortress

This fortress has a long and complicated past, dating back to the 13th century when it was built. It's current form is courtesy of the 17th century renovation. The fortrss itself bears witness to the militaristic history of the country- in the second world war it was used as a prison by the Nazis. There is a military history museum inside the fortress which goes back as far as the Vikings.
