At first glance a rather bleak place but there's so much to see here, starting with the 3200 year old Egyptian obelisk. And I love looking at all the statues of the french cities around the outside too! Great views all round, particularly up to the Arc de Triomphe.

whenever I go to Paris I always like to while away an afternoon at this University, one of the oldest in Europe, there are so many famous former students! A walk around and a mooch in the cafes just off the Place de la Sorbonne really makes you feel at home.

Also known as the Palais Opera, it was such a privilege to go and see a ballet here, although also slightly terrifying as the underground lake and someone being killed by a chandelier were inspiration for the phantom of the opera. I can't describe how lovely the building is, let's just say it's regarded as one of the masterpieces of the neo-baroque style.

Nearly all of the timber houses of Paris were pulled down to make way for Hausman's grand developments in the 19th century but a few of the old timber houses remain and it's worth seeing them to get a sense of how Paris looked in the middle ages. On Rue Volta near Rue des Vertus are the oldest timber houses in the Marais which date from the 14th century.

This is a huge museum with some of the most amazing art and collections in the world. It is too much to see in one day, but you can't come to Paris and not venture in. You will be in awe.
