The Museum of Occupation is quite a depressing experience as it chronicles the history of the country in servitude to its various overlords. The majority of the museum is devote to the life of Latvians under the Soviet Union and includes a soviet prison cabin. There is also a lot of material on the nazi period.

Probably not something that you should go out of your way but worth keeping your eyes peeled for, The three brothers are the oldest houses in Riga. They have very characterful fascades and sort of resemble brothers in that they are clear variation on a theme. They look like they'd be more inappropriate in Amsterdam than Riga!

The Latvian Freedom monument was built in 1935 to celebrate the Latvian war of independence which freed them from Soviet rule. When the Soviets reclaimed the country only 10 years later, the monument was allowed to stand and still does today against all the odds!

This is just a small thing I suppose but my wife and I stumbled across it on our honey moon. Aparently the custom of locking a padlock is worldwide now. In the city park in Riga, couples bolt padlocks on to the wrought metalwork gates before throwing the key under into the river. Of course, we had to go and buy a lock when we saw it!

We found great bargains at the Central Market. It's the largest market in the Baltic and located in the strange semi-cylindrical buildings near the bus station - they're converted Zeppelin hangars. They sell food produce but even if you're not buying it's a lively place to visit.

You'll see it when you leave the central bus station.
