I wanted to get off the tourist circuit on my holiday in Rome, so my hubby and me headed for this hill. We saw the amazing paintings of the houses that stood here (and still do, just underground), and had a relaxing lunch in the stunning Villa Celimontana gardens.

What a room! The vatican museums are great all round but the sistene chapel is most definitely the highlight, the ceiling, the last judgment, I really could have sat for hours and hours just finding new things, it's quite busy though.

I know, I know, there's more than enough actually in Rome to keep you happy, but the old port really is amazing and totally worth a look. And it's not just large bits of stone for ships to dock in, there's whole buildings, with frescoes and mosiacs and even a communial latrine!!

I totally recommend getting to the Vatican Museum before it opens and then making a beeline for the Sistine Chapel, it's so stunning and a real treat to see it without too many people in your way.

My absolute favourite place in Rome, the inside is simply breathtaking, and was partly done by michaelangelo. Go before you get church fatigue to really enjoy the experience. It's not quite as grand as the sistine chapel but you will get to see it without other people trampling on your toes and enjoy a rare few moments of peace!
