What a fascinating place! It almost looks like somewhere that the Roman buildings came to die, but with the help of my friend the history buff he brought the whole thing to light and I really enjoyed it. Thanks Sam!!

A climb up the stairs is vastly rewarded, with the magnificent Piazza del Campodoglio surrounded by no less than three palaces, one of which houses the Capitoline Museum which is great. Paths off the square have fantastic views.

The art galleries in Rome are endless and it's hard to know which one to prioritise. If you can only choose one, make it this. Home to a notorious private art collection, it provides the perfect introduction to Renaissance and baroque art.

These museums (linked underground under the Campodoglio Square) contain so many wonders of rome that my husband and I had to go back a second day to appreciate them all, since we only got there in the afternoon on the first day. It's well worth taking your time over.

No self-respecting history buff should ignore this location. In myth, the place where Romulus and Remus were raised by a wolf, it subsequently became ancient Rome's prime real estate and the ruins of many palaces and baths dot the hillside. Your ticket to Palatine Hill also gets you in to the Colliseum.
