You can't go to Rome and not see these Museums, they are the most phenomenal place i've ever been. So much to see, the tapestries, the library, the Borgia Apartments, and of course the Raphael Rooms featuring the Sistine Chapel. Well worth quite a hefty queue, would advise going early.

What a room! The vatican museums are great all round but the sistene chapel is most definitely the highlight, the ceiling, the last judgment, I really could have sat for hours and hours just finding new things, it's quite busy though.

A tip: We booked with a tour online before we went to the Vatican. It cost 30 euros which is apparently more than the regular cost but we decided that it was easily worth it as the alternative would have been to queue along with the rest of the tourist population of Rome with little hope of getting anywhere fast.

These museums (linked underground under the Campodoglio Square) contain so many wonders of rome that my husband and I had to go back a second day to appreciate them all, since we only got there in the afternoon on the first day. It's well worth taking your time over.

A lovely and extraordinary building, I loved the round plan. The papal apartments were really swish and I couldn't help but try to find where I thought the secret passageway to the Vatican might start! Really interesting place.
