Castel Gandolfo is on the outskirts of Rome and is famed for being the place where the pope takes his summer holidays. Given how close it is to Rome proper, Castel Gandolfo feels surprisingly like a small traditional Italian village. There's a beautiful lake, some enchanting streets and some great places to have a bite to eat.

The Traiano Lake is an artificial lake located in the Oasi di Porto. It's not that far from Rome but is relatively unknown which is great because it means that you don't really see many tourists here. the great thing about this place is that you can get a guided tour of te park in a horse drawn carriage. A perfect day trip to cool off and relax.

If, like me, you need to escape the heat and bustle of Rome for a day, this is the place for you. Bracciano is a sweet little town just 40km outside Rome. It's set on a scenic lake and features an incredible castle - a proper turrets, portcullis and drawbridge affair.
