Ok so 320-odd steps is a lot, but you'll be really pleased when you get up there. Just amazing views inside and out!

Capitoline Hill

A climb up the stairs is vastly rewarded, with the magnificent Piazza del Campodoglio surrounded by no less than three palaces, one of which houses the Capitoline Museum which is great. Paths off the square have fantastic views.

Montecassino

This is a beautiful abbey just outside Rome. Its perched on a really tall hill and has incredible view of the valley below. The entrance cloister is set on the site of an ancient Roman temple and for the architect buffs, there's also a cloister designed by the high renaissance architect - Bramante. As the abbey is still in use, visitors are asked to be quiet and respectful inside.

Giancolo Park

It's difficult to be a city tourist with kids in tow as there's only so many churches they'll look at without putting up a fight, and this park ios the perfect tonic. Plenty of space for them to run about and let off steam as well as a lovely puppet show at the teatro del burattini. Some great things for us too, most notably amazing views of the trastavere district and lovely fountains.

just south of the vatican, so perfect for the afternoon after the vatican museums

Behind the piazza del popolo you can escape to a green leafy world for a bit of relaxation as well as some great views (yes, that does mean a bit of a climb, sorry). my mum and i came here and loved the ambience and the lovely plants, so nice to be able to mix sights with greenery.
