This place was perfect for showing my children what mexican culture is all about, since all they know about is the food and that's about it! The square is great, with a lovely garden, and the kids really loved the mural. We also saw a mexican play aimed at kids as part of the annual festival which we were lucky enough to catch.

I really wanted to go here and see where the 'summer of love' all kicked off, even though i'd heard that it's gone a bit upmarket. True, there are some signs that it's lost its heart, but the discount shops, used clothing, record shops and hippy cafes are still really cool to walk round and there's plenty of youth atmosphere still there, whether that's the original feel or not i can't be sure.

The green dragon-topped pagoda of chinatown is a symbol of exciting things fellow travellers! delicious food either from the market stalls or from the restaurants should be your first stop, but don't neglect the beautiful temples to get the true feel of chinatown.
