Its definitely worth setting aside an hour to see the Jade Buddha Temple in the West of Shanghai. The temple was built in 1928 to replace the previous temple which was destroyed by revolutionaries. The statues are carved out of whole chunks of white jade and depict a sitting and recumbent Buddha and are very beautiful

The Shanghai People's Square is extremely modern and has a very cosmopolitan feel to it. The main reason to visit it would be the museum which has a large array of artefacts from throughout Chinese history. Highlights are the bronze age collection, the coins and the ceramics. There's also a well stocked bookshop.

The Yuyuan gardens date back to the 16th century and after a history of neglect and vandalism are finally in a beautiful state of repair with some beautiful cherry blossoms, streams and ornate dragon walls. The surrounding area boasts some beautiful traditional Chinese buildings and there are some excellent dim sum restaurants in the area.

This is the area from which you can see the colonial buildings on the English along Huang Pu. Across the bay, you can see the Pudong skyline which is lit up with bright neon lights by night. The contrast of old and modern is very striking. The Waidabu bridge is also an iconic landmark in China and can be seen from the Bund too.
