Vitosha

posted by gunk on 18 August 2010 at 11:22

Vitosha is a mountain just outside Sofia. It dominates the skyline in town and has a great view over the city. I hear that there's some good skiing here in winter, but when I was there in the summer it just made a great spot to go for a hike and eat at one of the many restaurants.

Borisova Park

posted by xwise on 18 August 2010 at 11:16

Borisova Park is an enormous expanse in central Sofia and features some very well kept areas as well as some bits that are quite wild and overgrown. Its lovely to walk around and you'll stumble across monuments, original little buildings and bits of wildlife along the way. In the summer it fills up with families who frequent the lakes, swimming pools and sports courts.

National Art Gallery

posted by ftodd on 18 August 2010 at 11:03

We chose not to go to the Museum of foreign art and instead went to the National art gallery which houses the indigenous collection of art with works from the renaissance to the modern day housed in an ornate former palace building. The museum is well curated with plenty of information in English.

Alexander Nevski Cathedral

posted by rnewman on 18 August 2010 at 10:57

The Alexander Nevski Cathedral is the number one sight in Bulgaria. It is 19th century and built in a neo Byzantine style. It sort of resembles a massive stack of iced cakes and houses some fantastic art. Its worth checking out the crypt if its open as it houses a great collection of icon paintings.

Taxi Fares

posted by Suet on 16 April 2007 at 16:20

Rip off at airport. April 2007 the current rate for a taxi means that to your hotel should cost an average of 5-8 lev. I thought 30 was reasonable until I ordered a taxi the follwing evening to discover they are so cheap. They are not cheap however in Sunny Beach at four times the price.

where, when, how, web
Just check at the airports and if they say 30 lev barter or walk away with the knowledge that the price is around 1 lev a km (35pence)
