New Acropolis Museum

posted by DVC_Chris on 20 August 2009 at 00:25

Visitors to Athens need to take the time out of their trip to visit the New Acropolis Museum, which just opened in June of 2009. This museum only takes about 90 minutes to go through, and you can see reproductions of the freezes from the Parthenon, as well as most of the Caryatid sculptures.

Athens Ledra Marriott Hotel

posted by Texas on 31 May 2009 at 18:08

This is one of the Marriott Hotels found in downtown Athens. I've stayed here during all of my stays in the city and it is a great hotel. Greece and Athens are my by far one of my most favorite places to visit. This hotel features great dinning and a luxurious lobby with affordable rates. The highlight of the hotel is the roof top pool which boast a view of the city and even has a beautiful view of the Acropolis. It is great for spending a relaxing day at the pool with full service food available all day. The most ideal setting to visit the roof top is at sunset to view the Acropolis as it lights up and have cocktails at the full service bar. It is also a great location for a wedding or any banquet; the hotel has plenty of packages to pick from.

Philopappou Hill

posted by mholts on 29 May 2009 at 01:55

Sunrise over the Acropolis - My second morning in Athens I was still quite jet lagged and woke up at 4am local time. I took advantage of this and the fact that the metro opens at 5am, and took the metro to the Acropoli station, took a left out of the entrance onto the broad promenade that leads up and around the Acropolis, and climbed the hill on the left as it got light and watched the sun rise over the Acropolis. You can see all of Athens from the top of the Hill, and early in the morning it is still very clear. There are some historic sites on the hill as well; a monument from 115 AD at the summit, and Pnyx, the meeting and oratory location of Demosthenes and Themistocles among others. It is very safe by this time in the Acropoli area, and there are numerous restaurants serving wonderful coffee and breakfast just back down to the other direction of the metro stop afterwards. Doing this so early in the morning means that there are very few people out, so you can really experience the history in a way hard to achieve during the regular tourist bustle.
