This is a really beautiful Buddhist temple with some lovely carved Buddhs sculptures and paintings inside. The gardens are much more peaceful than the temple itself which can get a bit frenetic. Perhaps the most interesting thing about this place though is the museum of gifts that have been donated to the temple which are on open display here. Watch out for scams!

The National Museum is a fairly good place to aquaint yourself with the history of the country. The museum goes back to prehistoric times and is well curated to give information on politics, literature, history and art. Elsewhere the exhibits are slightly more higgledy piggledy with collections of folk and foreign art and artefacts.

This is a very old and beautiful temple which has a rather convoluted history. The walls are lined with ornate carvings of Hindu deities which are very beautiful but the temple hosts the biggest collection of Buddhist art in the country with paintings dating from the 18th century and the striking shrine of the skeletal Buddha which is not to be missed.

Its definitely worth setting aside an hour to see the Jade Buddha Temple in the West of Shanghai. The temple was built in 1928 to replace the previous temple which was destroyed by revolutionaries. The statues are carved out of whole chunks of white jade and depict a sitting and recumbent Buddha and are very beautiful

The Shanghai People's Square is extremely modern and has a very cosmopolitan feel to it. The main reason to visit it would be the museum which has a large array of artefacts from throughout Chinese history. Highlights are the bronze age collection, the coins and the ceramics. There's also a well stocked bookshop.
