Hermitage

posted by momara on 12 August 2010 at 11:09

The Hermitage has to be one of the largest collections of art in the world and there's no feasible way of seeing it all. We got a two day pass and got there early on both days and still feel like we missed a lot. There are 6 buildings including the magnificent Winter Palace and they house paintings, tapestries, porcelain and lots and lots of furniture.

Norwegian folk museum

The Norwegian folk museum is a lovely boat trip across the fjord of Oslo from the city. It is situated within extensive grounds and is an evocation of the living conditions in Norway since the 16th century. Also on the site is a 13th century church which looks more like a Chinese pagoda than any christian building I'd seen.

Vigelandsparken

posted by rhook on 11 August 2010 at 16:33

The Vigelandsparken is an enormous 75 acre area of parkland which is filled with sculptures by Gustav Vigeland who was the premier sculptor of Norway. There are hundreds of sculptures in this garden, all of humans and all in different states and of different ages. Its a unique, fascinating and very well maintained place.

Las Chascona

This is the house of Pablo Neruda, built especially to house his mistress. It is an utterly sureal building- designed in parts to resemble a ship. It contains the remnants of his vast collections although sadly a large part of his library was torched under Pinochet. There's a nice little cafe in the house.

Plaza de Armas

This is the main square of Santiago and hard to miss really. As main squares go, its very nice. You'll find lots of artists and buskers here as well as some of the city's best architecture- including the spectacular cathedral. You should look out for the monument to the indigenous people which is an utterly unique piece of sculpture.
