The second city of Gran Canaria is well worth visiting if you want to check out the historical side of the island. It's the oldest city here and so you will find loads of old things to see, like the Basilica de San Juan Bautista.

Totally fascinating little place documenting the growth of the city from medieval riverside settlement to modern city. Great place, and you also get to go to the Civic Guards Gallery included in the price.

We saw this on the BBC's 40 things to see before you die, and I have to say it's amazing. The city is literally carved out of the rocks, it's just astonishing and fabulous. We got a ferry from Sharm which took a while but totally worth it.

A really interesting and informative ferry trip with beautiful views across Edinburgh and beyond, as well as a lot of wildlife you don't see elsewhere.
