La Almudaina is a 13th century Moorish fortress with some gothic elements to it. There are some beautiful gardens surrounding the palace and you can see a Miro sculpture here. Inside the palace is some much older art - paintings, tappestries, carvings etc... There is some information dotted around the palace so that you can learn a bit about the history of the building.

You can take a ferry from the Helsinki harbour to the Suomenlina Island. Its a great day out and there's lots to see and do. There's a massive fortress which is rich in history from Russian and Swedish wars. There's a museum there too with plenty of maps and artefacts which is very educational. Parts of the shipyard are still functioning and the beached submarine is not to be missed.

Chichen Itza is an ancient Mayan site and unmissable if you're in nearby Cancun. The most famous thing here is the iconic Castille which is an enormous pyramid. There's much more to the site though and most tour companies will allow you a couple of hours to wonser around as well as some time for a history lesson. It's a long day so take all precautions against sun stroke.

Only a short ride from Cancun, This is one of the most spectacular sites in Mexico. There are some incredible Mayan ruins here including a pyramid. The whole scene is framed against the depp ble of the Caribbean and is perhaps the most romantic place I've ever seen.
