The Latvian Freedom monument was built in 1935 to celebrate the Latvian war of independence which freed them from Soviet rule. When the Soviets reclaimed the country only 10 years later, the monument was allowed to stand and still does today against all the odds!

The National Galley of Romania is housed in the former royal palace building. It has a reasonably large collection of works by European masters but I would say that this collection is less impressive than those that you would find in capitals all over Europe and you should visit instead for the Romanian art section which is wonderful and well curated. A personal favourite was the Brancussi room.

The Palace of Parliament is a bizarre sight and a slightly sad one. Bucharest certainly isn't the place you'd imagine finding the second biggest building in the world and the boulevards leading to it are a bit dilapidated. Nonetheless it is an absolutely magnificent structure. You can get tours of some of the interior and stand on te balcony where Michael Jackson made his famous "Hello Budapest" address.

The Statue Park is really interesting if you can hack the 3,000 price tag. This is where you'll find all the comunist statues and monuments that have been ripped out of the centre of town. It's a bus ride out to the edge of town...
