Shalimar Garden

posted by fwoodward on 11 August 2010 at 10:37

The Shalimar Garden has certainly seen better days and is a bit ragged around the edges. Nonetheless its an incredible sight and testament to the awesome engineering know how of the Mughals . It's composed of three terraces which are irrigated by a canal. There are apparently 140 fountains in the gardens.

Ramakrishna Mutt Temple

If you go to the Kapaleeshwarar Temple, make sure you pop in at the Ramakrishna Mutt Temple which is just down the road. Its got a really nice feel to it as it has an open door policy to people of any sex or creed. Its dedicated to Ramakrishna Paramahamsa who is a very revered figure in Hinduism.

Ripon Building

posted by jjackson on 11 August 2010 at 10:08

The Ripon building is not far from the main train station and worth a look. Its a massive structure and fairly typical of the Anglo Indian colonial building style.

Kapaleeshwarar Temple

posted by phoffhants on 11 August 2010 at 09:54

The Kapaleeshwarar Temple is the largest and most beautiful in Chennai and one of the finest I saw during my travels in India. It is devoted to Shiva and is filled with shrines to various deities. The main Gopuram (tower) is 40m high and inlaid with incredibly ornate and richly coloured carvings. Its worth seeing the temple at one of the daily pujas which are quite a sight.

Bodrum Amphitheatre

posted by jcherry on 10 August 2010 at 17:16

We visited Bodrum a couple of years ago and enjoyed our trip out of town to the amphitheatre. It's an incredible piece of engineering and since 1973 has been an open air museum. We were told that in its day, it had a capacity of 13,000. We were really excited to hear that the amphitheatre was going to be used in the Gumusluk Classical Music Festival. I'm sure that will be an extraordinary spectacle and would urge anyone travelling to Bodrum to look into it.
