The Spring Racing Carnival is a fabulous 3-4 week even which culminates in the last week with Australia's most famous races. The Melbourne Cup is a horse race that stops the nation - the British Grand National doesn't even come close to this one. Melburnians even get a public holiday to fully enjoy the festivities - the first Tuesday of November. It's a great day out with 70,000 other people all dressed up, ladies with their hats, sipping champagne, swallowing oysters and other delectable treats and having a good punt. On top of all of that, it's actually quite a cheap day out. Tickets are usually around $50-$60 and include return train travel from the city. If you can't make the Cup (the actual race starts at 3pm) then there are several days worth attending - Thursday after Cup Day is Ladies Day aka Oaks (now attended by more men as they realise that it's not just the fillies who are hot!), Saturday before the Cup is Derby Day especially for families.
