Plaza Mayor

posted by doyerdog on 15 June 2009 at 02:54

Madrid’s Plaza Mayor has the look and feel of the quintessential plaza of Old Europe. It’s the perfect place in the city centre to kick back and sip on some Spanish wine, munch on some tapas, and just take it all in. If you can arrange it so you’re there around dusk, that’s an amazing time to soak it up. Loads of people are out (both locals and tourists), and no matter which direction you’re looking…pristine visages await you. There’s plenty of affordable hotels and hostels within walking distance, and safety and security is a given.

Puerta Del Sol

posted by doyerdog on 8 June 2009 at 02:56

Puerta Del Sol is the gorgeous city center of Madrid. I had the privilege of being taken there by a friend who’s a native Madridian but you don’t need that cool aspect to fully get the beauty and ore of this plaza. This place has a little of all the best that Madrid has to offer, including tapas, drinks, local vendors and truly awesome architecture. When I went the sunshine was at its peak and visitors were in abundance, but even with all the foot-traffic it never felt overwhelming. One thing to keep in mind are pickpockets. I was fortunate enough to not fall victim, but I knew some that were…so just keep it in the back of your head when you’re there. But honestly, just go! You won’t be sorry.

Temple Bar

One of my favourite and most memorable spots during my visit to Dublin was the Temple Bar stretch of road. Granted it’s a little on the tourist-y side, but if you explore the small streets off the beaten path, you’ll be sure to find some great pubs with perfectly quaint and just plain ol’ Irish ambience. Pints were slightly on the price-y side, but that just comes with the territory I suppose. It’s not just drinking though which should be done whilst there. You must take at least few moments to sit down and enjoy the river which flows right past you. That along with the people-watching, all the more reason to set aside at least an afternoon or evening along Temple Bar.
