Plaza de Armas

This is the main square of Santiago and hard to miss really. As main squares go, its very nice. You'll find lots of artists and buskers here as well as some of the city's best architecture- including the spectacular cathedral. You should look out for the monument to the indigenous people which is an utterly unique piece of sculpture.

Plaza Murillo

This is the traditional centre of La Paz and is a very attractive square. It is surrounded by some beautiful buildings- The Cathedral, Presidential Palace and Congress. Its a lovely spot in the late afternoon when people tend to congregate here and is a good place to head for dinner as there are plenty of restaurants around.

Ipanema

posted by gevans on 11 August 2010 at 12:27

Ipanema has to be the hippest spot in Rio and benefits from the Copacabana's pull on tourists. There are lots of nice restaurants and shops in the area surrounding the beach and you must stop at one of the many beach bars for a caiparinha. There are lots of sports played on the beach and its generally a very sociable place.

Liberdade

This is the Japanese district in Sao Paulo and grew up after the influx of Japanese immigrants after WWII. Its especially worth going on a Sunday morning when there's a bustling market here.

Daman-i-Koh

Daman-i-Koh is a beautiful area of the Margalla hills just outside town. From here you have incredible views over the city and even as far as Rawal Dam lake. The area is very well maintained and is a great spot for picnics and hiking.
