Puerto Mogan

posted by phook on 26 November 2010 at 15:31

My friends and I embarked on a tour of gran canaria and Puerto mogan surprised me the most. Dubbed little venice due to canal-like channels between some of the buildings and its lack of cars in the pedestrianised centre. It's a charming village with beautiful flowers and the marina is just the place to be at night. Definitely worth a visit!

where, when, how, web
on the south-west facing coast of the island, follow the road from mogan itself to the shore

Portinatx

Portinatx is right on the northern tip of the island and it's so beautiful here, even if you stay in the south you should at least have a day trip this way. Any of the beaches are perfect but I enjoyed the most northern one the best, turquoise waters and white sands abound though so you'll be in for a treat wherever you visit.

North of the island, you might need a car to get there

Icod de los Vinos

This has the largest volcanic cavity in the world in Cueva del Viento and has some unique flora and fauna, and as a bonus you can also see the ancient dragon tree (~800 years old!) about which so many myths have sprung up. A great and unforgettable place to go.

Viraflor

This is the highest village in all of spain and you really do have that on-the-top-of-the-world feeling! It's a quaint little place where we had a lovely lunch and a wander round whilst enjoying the cooler weather they have at that altitude.

tf-21, towards the south of the island on the way to mount teide national park

Last time we went to Edinburgh we took a day trip to Roslin and enjoyed looking round the now-famous Rosslyn Chapel, which is beautiful (was in the da vanci code) and then ha da walk in the roslin glen and saw the ruined castle, a great day out.

where, when, how, web
About 10 miles south of the centre, we drove but i imagine you can also get the bus there
