The Bridge Of Sighs

posted by NoleyNoley on 19 March 2009 at 14:37

The Bridge of Sighs is one of the numerous bridges that span the rivers that run through Venice. Besides being very spectacular architecturally, this bridge has an interesting history behind it. It's name originates from Lord Byron because this bridge used to connect the prison and interrogation room, known as the Doge's Palace. Prisoners would 'sigh' as they walked across the bridge, thus the name. Today it is not used to transport prisoners, but as a romantic place for lovers and tourists alike.
