With its beautiful beaches, picturesque scenery and buzzing nightlife it's no wonder Zante ranks high on the Brits list of places to visit. The capital Zakynthos Town is a must for the Venetian castle ruins – they provide a perfect view of the city. Agios Nikolaos in the north east is a beautiful small village, while Laganas is the place to party! Between May and June there's even a chance of spotting Loggerhead turtles. Other areas worth visiting during a holiday to Zante include Kalamaki, the family-orientated resort of Tsilivi and the famous Navagio Beach, home to a washed up shipwreck!
With direct flights to Zante available from most UK airports the island is easily accessible making it the perfect base for a sun-filled week away. Airlines such as easyJet, Monarch, Thomson Flights and Flythomascook all offer direct flights to Zante. Indirect flights are offered but be aware that they'll be considerably more expensive. Zakynthos Airport is located six kilometres away from Zakynthos Town. It's worth bearing in mind that you won't be able to purchase any evening flights to the island as planes are prohibited from taking off or landing during the night as this is when Loggerhead turtles laying their eggs.
One of the best ways to get a good feel of the culture on the island during your holiday in Zante is to hire a car. There are many car rental agencies on the island so make sure you shop around to ensure you'll get the best deal on your car hire in Zante - it's also worth booking well in advance. Just beware about the conditions of the roads and look out for potholes!
As one of the sunniest places in Greece, Zante is a popular place for tourists – temperatures can reach up to an attractive 32 degrees during the summer months. Unfortunately this can also mean that prices can be expensive. But it's still possible to visit the island if you're on a budget - just make sure you book your hotel in Zante as early as possible in order to take advantage of the cheap deals. Booking your holiday during the low season can work out a lot cheaper but be aware that some of tourist attractions will shut down during the winter months.
Cycling is a cheap and pleasant way to explore the beauty of the island. If you're planning to do lots of sightseeing try to do it on consecutive days as many rental shops offer discount for multi-day hire periods. However some shops don't offer helmets so bring your own if you wish to wear one.
