What’s Hot January 2017?

We’ve heard rumours about something called the post-Christmas slump but here at dealchecker, we’re too excited about these upcoming events in January to feel glum. Happy 2017, we say!

Chinese New Year – Hong Kong

Here in England, our new year’s celebrations may be over but that’s not to say that there are no new celebrations to be had. The Chinese New Year is yet to come, and where better to celebrate than in Hong Kong itself? The festivities begin on the 28th January with a huge parade throughout the city. You can expect dragon dances, impressive floats and an air of excitement! This event marks the beginning of the year of the rooster, a year said to be characterised by the creature’s punctuality and faithfulness.

The Great Sausage Roll Off – London

There’s nothing more British than a sausage roll, one could argue. To celebrate the flaky, meaty goodness of this delicious treat, the Red Lion pub in Barnes is hosting The Great Sausage Roll Off on the 25th January, giving 20 contestants the chance to show off their baking skills to a team of discerning judges. This team includes Duck and Waffle’s, Dan Docherty. If your cooking skills are lacking, you can still have a slice of the action by turning up to the pub to spectate (or eat to your heart’s content).

Sugar Mountain – Melbourne

Whilst we shiver in the English winter gloom, Melbourne basks in glorious sunshine. For the full summer experience why not pair your trip to Melbourne this January with the Sugar Mountain day festival? What could be better than sipping cocktails in the sunshine whilst listening to the dulcet tones of headliners such as Blood Orange and Jessy Lanza? The event takes place on the 21st January but be quick, and grab tickets whilst they are available.

Cartagena International Music Festival – Colombia

With sunflower yellow-clad buildings and grandiose squares, Cartagena in Colombia is tempting all year round. However, from the 6th – 16th January, those same squares become full with the sound of classical music during the Cartagena International Music Festival. The festival sees artists from around the world gather in this gorgeous city for a combination of ticketed and free events, meaning that you can enjoy the festival no matter the size of your budget.
