8 Places You Can See Snow… Now!

Let’s be honest, we all got a tad over-excited by this week’s snowfall. A good inch fell across the capital on Sunday, and Londoners found themselves desperately scraping together enough snow from their car bonnets to put together some quite frankly disappointing snowmen. We can’t remember the last time snow fell before Christmas day though, which means even the most vehement of scrooges are out there frolicking in the snow. If the weather has left you with a taste for more of the white stuff, we’ve put together a handy list of destinations where you’ll find it!

Cotswolds, England

Just an couple of hours, or so, outside of London are the picturesque Cotswolds, a place which is just so incredibly charming that it’s been declared an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A picture-perfect postcard at the best of times, can you imagine what it’s like when its rolling hills and cobbled villages are covered in a blanket of snow?

Scottish Highlands

If you’re as serious about your quest for snow as we are, get yourself up to the Scottish Highlands. With temperatures plummeting to below zero and a recent fresh fall of powder, the already stunning landscapes have been transformed to winter wonderlands similar to the scenes in Wham’s ‘Last Christmas’ video. This shot was taken at the Glenfinnan Viaduct which was picked as a filming location for the magical Harry Potter films.

Schladming, Austria

Unusual for this time of year, Austria has received a massive snowfall which has been welcomed by keen skiers who flock to this part of Europe for its pistes and gentle pine tree-lined slopes. Typically, the cosy resort town of Schladming doesn’t get a snowfall until well after the new year, but the mountains have been covered with fresh powder snow, ideal for skiing and snowboarding.

Niseko, Japan

Niseko in the very north of Japan has been in the grip of some pretty full-on blizzards, with 25cm of the stuff settling in just 24 hours. What’s more, it’s still going strong, meaning that the Japanese are experiencing knee-deep snow. This destination in particular is a highly revered ski spot and the surrounding mountains are peppered with hot springs and dormant volcanoes, meaning that this region is a pretty spectacular sight to behold when covered in snow!

Frankfurt, Germany

The Germans really do know how to do Christmas, and this year, their legendary Christmas markets have been made even more festive with a soft dusting of snow. Frankfurt‘s Old Town is known for its cobbled backstreets, soaring spires and medieval-style buildings that line the squares. This time of year is when its grand plazas are taken over by bustling markets serving glühwein to thirsty shoppers and tourists, who this year, can’t resist snapping shots of their time in the snow.

Moscow, Russia

The famous Saint Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow‘s Red Square is known for its iconic ginger bread house-style exterior that looks good enough to eat. This year, Moscow, as predicted, has received a generous helping of snow in the run up to Christmas, and it has truly worked its wonder on the capital. The city’s red-bricked buildings have transformed into magical sights, with Saint Basil’s gingerbread house now dusted with a scattering of icing sugar, and the red pop of colour even more extenuated against a background of pure white snow.

Pyranees, Franc

The Pyranees are a natural mountainous border between France and Spain, and a snow-seekers paradise. Showing off France’s wild and rustic side, the Pyranees is made up of a serious of rolling hills and quaint French villages that seems a world away from the cosmopolitanism of Paris. This week the hills here have been dusted with snow transforming the landscape into a winter wonderland

Belfast, Northern Ireland

Despite its proximity to the sea, which usually means the northern Irish capital doesn’t get to see much snow, Belfast has been covered in a wintery blanket over the last week. Schools have closed, much to the excitement of school children across the capital, and the hills surrounding the city are looking even prettier than usual.
