It’s National Vegetarian Week this week, so to celebrate, one of our veggie dealcheckers, Kunal, has shared his top tips for meat-free dining in Germany’s buzzing capital – Berlin.

Last year on our trip to Berlin we were very excited, not only for the amazing sights to see and great nightlife, but also for the fantastic vegetarian and vegan food we had heard about. Given that we both are fans of trying new and exciting foods, we did plenty of research beforehand to make sure we got to try a good variety of the different options.

It came as no surprise that the main square in Berlin offered a great variety of choice in terms of the different culinary options available. While I can’t remember the exact name of the food stall that we visited, I tried a fantastic local dish, which featured a thick salted pastry base with a healthy portion of vegetables cooked in a rich cream and cheese sauce and topped with spices. Although it was very difficult to eat, it was still delicious. The walk afterwards was much needed.

The Urban Nation area

On one of our afternoons, we were around the Urban Nation, located near the Bulowstrasse underground stop. As we were walking, we came across a shawarma restaurant in a parade of shops. I had remembered that Berlin is renowned for the local street vendors and shawarma, so we decided to pay a visit. I was happily surprised about what I received in terms of the flavours and the amount of food, for a low price.

Krone Café

Though it was a little further away from where we were staying, we had heard about this fantastic breakfast café located in the Kollwitzkiez area. Although a bit of a walk from the nearest station, it was definitely worth the visit. There was a good variety of choice on the menu, including pancakes, options for vegans, half a dozen ways to have eggs and simple things such as granola and porridge. Being a big fan of pancakes, I decided to have them with caramel sauce, wild berries, banana and whipped cream.

Soy Restaurant

Through a friend it was recommended that we check out a vegan restaurant called Soy, which specialised in Asian cuisine, located around the Rosa-Luxemburg-Strasse area. Being vegetarian, I was happy to find somewhere where I knew I could eat everything. Also, the price wasn’t too much given the quality of what was on offer.
