. “Sex is the consolation you have when you can't have love.” – Gabriel García Márquez, Colombian writer. . (the Red Light district flooded with curious tourist as the sun sets during the Easter Sunday. Amsterdam, Netherlands 🇳🇱) . | interesting stuff | De Wallen is the largest and best known Red Light district in Amsterdam. It has about 300 cabins where prostitutes offer their services. As early as 1270 when a bridge was built in the area, prostitution and migrants have been present like in many harbors. In the medieval times married men and priests were forbidden in the area and after 1578 when a Protestant board was formed, prostitution became illegal. But sex trade continued underground in various forms and in combination with gambling houses. In 1811 the ban was lifted and the French Napoleonic soldiers became the main customers. In 1911 a law again was passed banning prostitution but again the trade continued in different forms and it was often tolerated by the police. It was until 1988 when prostitution was defined as a profession. . . . . . #amsterdam #netherlands #holland #dewallen #prostitution #redlightdistrict #redlightdistrictamsterdam #spring #redlight
