Hiring a car in Egypt

You'll find a unique culture and history in Egypt, as well as fantastic beach resorts. Your Egypt car hire will give you the freedom to explore this fascinating country, from its iconic pyramids to its sensational coastline and rolling desert sand dunes. Start your road trip at the airport when you arrive or pick up your car from one of the city centres. Cars drive on the right-hand side of the road here. Driving on the chaotic roads of Cairo and other major cities can be tricky. Be prepared to encounter lots of speed bumps scattered around the country.

Places to visit around Egypt

If the capital of Cairo is your base, then the majestic Giza Pyramids make a good first stop on your Egyptian adventure. Then head to Luxor where you can check out the ancient ruins of Karnak with its intricately carved temples. Or visit the nearby Valley of the Kings to see the vibrantly decorated royal tombs. From here you can take a relaxing river boat trip along the picturesque Luxor-Aswan route of the Nile. Make your way over to the beautiful coast where you'll find wonderful resorts in Sharm El Sheikh. Go snorkelling or scuba diving to swim alongside tropical fish and the colourful coral reef in the Red Sea.

General Advice on Hiring a Car

When you purchase car hire you are entering into a contract with your car hire company. Always check their terms and conditions before you buy to make sure you're aware of your responsibilities when you collect your car in Egypt, and any additional charges.

Here's a few things to watch out for:

  • Almost all car hire companies add a mandatory fee for drivers under the age of 25.
  • Check what level of insurance is included for the hire car in Egypt. In particular check how much the excess is (the amount you need to pay in the event of any accident) you may want to take out additional insurance.
  • Check what the fuel policy is with your car. Don't forget to fill up the tank before you drop it off if you've agreed to return it full!
  • Find out if there's a maximum daily mileage - especially if you're planning to do a lot of driving in Egypt!
  • You'll need to pay a deposit (or pre-approve one) to pick up the car. Most car rental companies will only accept credit cards for this.
